Yes, sharks serve multiple purposes, no doubt. And, yes, the drug cartels leave no possible means for bringing drugs into this country untried. However, for every 2 pounds of "illegal" drugs confiscated, it is estimated that 8 pounds finds its way to the streets of the United States.

From the cartels point of view this is simply the cost of doing business, and our "war" is breaking the bank, filling prisons with "mules" instead of the top echelons of the cartels and too often authorities either look the other way or are paid to assist.

The fact is there is a major market. It is called the United States. And as long as there is a market, someone, somewhere will find a way to meet the demands of the market.

And, there are even markets in the most repressive regimes in the world. If the threat of death does not deter, how can one expect the threat of a prison term to be a deterrent.

The lesson of prohibition in the early 20th century in the United States is lost on those who claim that with enough prisons and guards, the drug war can be won. Does anyone know what the word "delusional" means? Human appetites will be fed. The history of man is fraught with attempts to control such social issues and none have truly been effective.

Face it - people do what they wish regardless of the implications. Just look around. If you don't see it, you are not really looking. Certainly, most people abide by the law, but even they likely have committed some transgression that is legally questionable, and as the old saying goes, "It isn't illegal if you don't get caught!"
