How Do
Stun
Guns work?
A
stun
gun is an electrical self-defense device that uses high voltage
to stop an attacker. Touching a person with the prongs on the stun
gun quickly immobilizes the attacker. However, because the amperage
is very low, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted.
The stun gun is designed to key into
the nervous system. It dumps its energy into the muscles at a high
pulse frequency that makes the muscles work very rapidly, but not
efficiently. This rapid work cycle depletes blood sugar by
converting it to lactic acid all in just seconds. The resulting
energy loss makes it difficult to move and function. At the same
time, the tiny neurological impulses that travel throughout the body
to direct muscle movement are interrupted. This causes
disorientation and loss of balance and leaves the attacker in a
passive and confused condition for several minutes. Still, there is
no significant effect on the heart and other organs.
As a general rule, a one-half second contact can repel and startle
the attacker, giving some pain and muscle contraction. One to two
seconds can cause muscle spasms and a dazed mental state. Over three
seconds can cause loss of balance and muscle control, mental
confusion and disorientation. Realize that 3 seconds is quite a
long time when in a physical struggle. Every person is different
and will react differently to the effects of a stun gun. What may
put one person down in 3 seconds could take 5 seconds on another
person.
The electrical shock that emits
from the unit will not pass from the person being stunned to the
person doing the stunning. The effect is localized only in the
affected area and does not pass through the body. Even if you or the
attacker are wet or standing in water, you will not get shocked.
Choosing a
stun gun
Each
of the stun guns pictured are effective options you have when
defending yourself. The model you choose depends largely on your
personal preference. There are different (physical) sizes of stun
guns and different voltages you can choose from. Dimensions are
given on each page for each stun gun where appropriate. Generally,
the higher the voltage, the quicker the full effect of the stun
device will happen. Lower voltage models are still effective though
they make take a second or two longer to have full effect on your
assailant. We generally recommend you get the highest voltage you
can comfortably carry.
You
may also need to consider your specific application. If you need to
be covert, the cell phone stun gun
or one of the stun flashlights may
be what you need. If you security guards need extended reach, then
get one of the stun batons. And for an
extra small stun gun that fits great in your purse, try a
Talon Mini or the new mini but powerful
Runt or
HotShot.

(NOTE: Stun Guns require
batteries that have sufficient juice to power these devices. Stun
Master recommends Eveready Energizer batteries. When a customer says
their stun gun does not work, 99.9% of the time it's because the
customer was not using the recommended battery. Once they change the
battery, it works fine. Order new batteries with your stun gun. It's
cheaper than many stores!)
Stun Devices can not be shipped to the
states of Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey,
New York, Wisconsin or the city of Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia,
PA.
